Why German Defence Industry is miffed with Scholz Govt Over Purchase of F-35 Stealth Fighters

Military News

Germany is facing flak from domestic defence majors over equipment deals with US manufacturers. In March, Germany announced a F-35 deal with Lockheed Martin to replace the country’s ageing Tornado fighter jets. The German air force has been flying the Tornados since the 1980s, and they are due to be phased out between 2025 and 2030. Chancellor Olaf Scholz pledged €100 billion to modernise the German military just days after Russia invaded Ukraine. However, critics have dubbed German plans to import weapons from overseas partners as “hasty” and “thoughtless.”
