The Battle of the Seelow Heights | Zhukov at the Gates of Berlin
The Battle of the Seelow Heights was one of the last and bloodiest clashes on the Eastern Front during World War II. From April 16 to 19, 1945, Soviet Marshal Georgy Zhukov led a massive assault against German defenses positioned on the Seelow Heights, just 90 kilometers from Berlin. This offensive was part of the final push of the Red Army toward the capital of the Third Reich.
The German defenders, under General Gotthard Heinrici, had heavily fortified the area, using the elevated terrain and flooded marshes to their advantage. Despite being outnumbered, the German lines offered fierce resistance that delayed the Soviet advance and caused heavy casualties. Zhukov resorted to massive artillery bombardments and repeated frontal attacks.
Despite German resistance, the overwhelming power of the Red Army eventually broke through. The battle left tens of thousands dead and wounded on both sides, highlighting the high cost of total war. The struggle at Seelow became a symbol of the German army’s final stand and the unstoppable Soviet advance.
With the victory at Seelow, Zhukov opened the road to Berlin. Within days, Soviet troops surrounded the capital, beginning the final siege that would end with Germany’s unconditional surrender on May 8, 1945.
