When Russia began its all-out war on Ukraine, the coastal city of Mariupol was among its first targets. The city and its roughly 4,000 defenders were quickly surrounded by 20,000 Russian troops and their proxy allies, but against all the odds held out for 80 days before finally surrendering. In doing so, they bought vital time for Ukraine to defend its capital Kyiv and then reinforce the Donbas region. This is how a tiny force of Ukrainians managed to hold out for so long against a much larger Russian army.
