Germany has decided to replace its aging Tornado bomber jets with US-made F-35s amid the war in Ukraine. The announcement came as President Putin recently put Russia’s nuclear deterrent forces on high alert. Germany stores US B61 nuclear gravity bombs at the Büchel Airbase as part of Cold War nuclear deterrence. The B61 thermo-nuclear gravity bomb does not contain a guidance system and simply follows a ballistic trajectory.
