Filming ’Saving Private Ryan’ on Curracloe Beach, Co. Wexford, Ireland 1997
Production of the Stephen Spielberg film ‘Saving Private Ryan’ takes place on a Wexford beach.
Members of the Reserve Defence Force dressed in Second World War US Army uniforms and carrying weapons from the period marching for their part in a £40 million Steven Spielberg war epic. Curracloe Beach is the location for recreating the D-Day landings at Omaha Beach, Normandy, during the Second World War for the film ‘Saving Private Ryan’.
Lieutenant Colonel Pierce McCorley talks about the nature of the production of a film which depicts one of the bloodiest battles in history. Denis Cloney, who owns the land on which the filming is taking place, explains how he it from a German in 1960.
Producer Ian Bryce says Stephen Spielberg is very pleased with what they have been able to create at the location during filming.
‘Saving Private Ryan’ went on to win five Oscars, including Best Director for Steven Spielberg.
