F-16s vs. MiG-29s: The Battle for Ukraine’s Air Supremacy Unveiled
The skies above Ukraine have become a battleground for two of the most iconic fighter jets of the Cold War era: the American F-16 Fighting Falcon and the Soviet MiG-29 Fulcrum. As the war grinds on, questions have swirled about the potential deployment of Western fighter jets, with the F-16 emerging as the frontrunner to bolster Ukraine’s air force against Russian dominance.
In late March 2023, a significant milestone was reached when the decision was greenlit to permit the sale of pre-owned Mikoyan MiG-29 fighter jets from Slovakia and Poland to Ukraine. This move was presented as a game-changer, especially after the US announced its decision to allow Western allies to supply advanced fighter jets, including American-made F-16s, to Ukraine during the G7 summit in Hiroshima.
