Finland is likely to make a decision on whether to apply for NATO membership this week. Sweden’s ruling Social Democrats will reportedly decide on May 15 whether to ask for NATO membership. So far, the two Nordic countries have been wary of antagonising their giant nuclear-armed neighbour, Russia. Russia has warned of “a military technical response”, including deployment of nukes in the Baltics, if Sweden and Finland join the NATO. NATO’s Nordic expansion a boon or bane for Europe?
